The Hakone Kankosen company introduced its first European-style pleasure craft in 1950, then pivoted to theatrical design in 1976 with a replica Swedish frigate. By 2013, three ornate galleons — the Royal II, Victory, and Queen Ashinoko — comprised the fleet, each rendering of 17th- and 18th-century French and British warships down to gilded stern carvings and fiberglass cannons.
